6: Architecture Illustration

The last major project of this class was to create an architectural illustration. I chose to illustrate a scene from Venice, Italy. I really like Venice and would love to go there because I think it is a very unique place. I am also very drawn to all the different colors of the architecture of Venice and all of this architecture is built on stilts because of the water surrounding the city. For this piece, I chose to keep the bright color scheme of the original photo. I used the pen tool to create shapes and background buildings for depth. I also chose to incorporate the crumbling edges around windows and the water and boat as well to create depth and a scene. This piece’s strongest point is the illusion of depth because of the boat in the foreground and buildings getting smaller into the background of the piece. There is a lot of hard work that went into this and I am fairly proud of the result. I would have liked to explore textures more on the focal point building of the piece but couldn’t find any that really fit as well as I wanted.

5: Typography Portraits

This project consisted of three separate assignments all using typography to create a portrait. The first portrait uses typography as shapes to create of portrait of myself. This portrait uses a lot of C's to create my wavy hair and jawline. The second portrait uses lines of phrases to create a full figure portrait of myself. This portrait was fun to do because of the pose I was in. This portrait has heavier lines around my clothing and hair. The third and final portrait uses typography phrases to create value. This portrait is my favorite because my pose is fun and there are really a lot of valued shapes that make up this portrait. I like how the portrait is simple and to the point and believe it really does look like me. Here are the before and afters of the portraits:

4: Logo Design

This project was for an actual client who owns a dog rescue in Macungie, Pennsylvania. The client wanted a logo and package along with it including stationary, envelopes, and a business card. The name of the non-profit dog rescue organization was 4 Paws Forward Rescue Inc. This rescue focused on helping dogs find new homes and teaching adopters how to take care of their new pets. My logo design incorporates four paws and a large number 4. I chose red and black for the colors of this logo because the color red represents rescue crosses and generally help or first aid. My logo has a lot of movement and focuses on the paws and name of the rescue to show viewers that iit is for dogs.

3: Website Interface

The goal of this project was to create a website interface for a Native American Jewelry Website. The purpose of the site is to sell and feature handmade jewelry. For the layout of the home page of the site, I focused on creating the mood a Native American jewelry site would want. I used textures and samples of jewelry on this homepage to draw visitors in to shop. The text on the home page reads about the jewelry and what is offered, while showing the icon of credit cards accepted and 100% Satisfaction Guarantee in bold. The navigation bar of the website is down the left side of the page and features each different type of jewelry the site offers to easily find what products the visitor is looking for. This website layout is easy to navigate, functional, and the perfect look for a Native American Jewelry website!

2: Dreamscape

The purpose of this project was to have fun and create a dreamscape including any elements I wanted. I chose to base this project off of my usual dreams which are dreary and blurry. The elements incorporated within this piece are all things that make up who I am and the images that run through my head. The piece has many different layers and textures that really create a dream-like feeling. This was the most creative piece I completed in this class and am proud of the finished result.

Artist Statement:
A dreamscape to me compromises all the things floating around in the head that are conveyed through flashes of images, light, and dreams. My own dreamscape is a combination of the dreams I have while I sleep and the dreams I make for myself while my mind wanders. For my piece, I decided to use all pictures taken by myself, and to combine the dark with the light and beautiful. I tend to have morbid dreams with eerie tones and dark themes. I chose to incorporate this into my piece by starting with the background image of a morgue in Alcatraz. I also liked the textures and tools in this original image, and the colors are similar to the schemes of my usual dreams. I also used a darkened image of an old couch that I have ended up falling asleep on for most of my life. The couch is the focal point of this piece because it is where experienced dreams also meet constructed dreams. For this piece, I chose to use a lot of foliage because it reminds me of patterns and I like to see elements that repeat and have a rhythm to them. I chose to use the picture of my neck and face because I think it is a good representation of how I feel when I dream. All elements of this piece are subtle and blurred around the couch and bird because I want the piece itself to feel like a dream. The images include parts of places I have been, beautiful things I have interacted with, and scars I have received. I think the combinations of confusing, yet beautiful, but also eerie tones create balance in this piece and also dream-like qualities within it.

1: Magazine Cover

This objective of this project was to create a magazine cover utilizing a nameplate, headlines, highlighting, and a main image. I chose to title my magazine Ivory Air and have the cover featuring a photograph taken by Vivian Maier. Vivian Maier is a photographer that used film to capture everyday life of everyday people in cities during the 1950's. For this magazine cover, I chose to make the nameplate a bright red with a bit of a drop shadow so it has depth and really attracts readers. This nameplate also contrasts heavily with the black and white of the photograph. I wanted to keep this cover simple and not cluttered so the photograph which is a piece of art could be showcased. The magazine has one headline reading 'The Lost Work of Vivian Maier' because this would be the focus of the magazine. I also chose to arrange the photograph slightly to the right to create an interesting composition.
